Enable Slack User Groups for AI Teammate Mentions
Type uses Slack User Groups to create teammate-specific handles, such as @sales-operations. When User Group creation is enabled, Type can connect a channel in mentions-only mode and tell Slack to route that teammate handle back to the right AI teammate.
If Slack blocks User Group creation, the channel can still connect. People can keep mentioning the Type app directly, but teammate-specific handles will not work until a Slack admin updates the permission below and Slack is reconnected in Type.
Update the Slack permissions
Section titled “Update the Slack permissions”- In Slack, open your workspace or organization menu from the desktop app.
- Open Tools & settings.
- For a single workspace, choose Workspace settings. For Enterprise Grid, choose Organization settings if an org policy controls this permission.
- Open Roles & permissions.
- On Account types, find Create and edit user groups.
- Open the three-dot menu, choose Edit permission, and allow regular members to create and edit user groups.
- Find Deactivate user groups.
- Open the three-dot menu, choose Edit permission, and allow regular members to deactivate user groups.
- Save the changes.
Type needs both permissions: it creates and updates teammate handles when Slack tasks are connected, and it deactivates a handle after the last task that uses it is removed.
Slack’s official instructions are in Manage user groups from the admin dashboard.
Reconnect Slack in Type
Section titled “Reconnect Slack in Type”After the Slack permissions are updated:
- Open Type workspace settings.
- Go to Connections.
- Open Slack.
- Reconnect Slack so Type can retry teammate handle creation.
- Select Sync user groups to retry any teammate handles that Slack could not create before.
Once Type can create the User Group, the Slack channel announcement will show the teammate-specific handle to mention.
When a Slack task is removed, Type disables the teammate User Group if no remaining Slack task still uses it. If Slack does not allow Type to disable the User Group, Type still removes the task and shows a warning so an admin can fix the permission and retry Sync user groups.
What happens before this is fixed
Section titled “What happens before this is fixed”Type keeps the channel connection active. In mentions-only mode, Type falls back to the Slack app mention, such as @Type, instead of the teammate-specific User Group handle. Updating the Slack permission lets Type replace that fallback with the teammate handle.
